The preparations of The Seventh World Congress on Computational Mechanics are proceeding on schedule. We have received very enthusiastic responses to the call for abstracts, and we
appreciate your contributions to the congress. Please take note of the following six (6) reminders:

(1) CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The deadline of abstracts submission is March 15, 2006.

(2) EARLY REGISTRATION:
The Early Registration deadline for WCCM-VII, February 15, 2006, is approaching. You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the reduced early registration fee.

(3) ACCOMMODATION
A block of rooms are available at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel at a special WCCM-VII Congress rate. Please book the rooms as soon as possible. Mention the code "World Congress on Computational Mechanics" to receive our special room rate.

(4) PLENARY AND SEMI-PLENARY LECTURERS

"Electromechanical Materials and Devices" Mini-Symposium, The 5th International Forum on Advanced Material Science and Technology (IFAMST-5)

The 14th International Conference on the Strength of Materials (ICSMA14) will be held from June 4th to 9th, 2006, in Xi'an city, China. The proceedings of the conference will be published in a separate issue of Materials Science and Engineering A (MSE-A), after the conference. Each contribution will go through the usual peer reviewing procedure of MSE-A. Special events for R.D. Mindlin's 100th anniversary

Raymond D. Mindlin, one of the greatest solid mechanicians of the 20th century, was born on September 17, 1906, in New York City. Professor Mindlin had made seminal contributions to many branches of applied mechanics, including photoelasticity, three-dimensional elasticity, contact and impact mechanics, waves and vibrations, piezoelectricity, gradient theories, unified multiscale constitutive theories, etc. His pioneering work has inspired many of the contemporary research areas, ranging from solid mechanics to soil mechanics, from structural mechanics to lattice theory, from size effect in metals to mechanics of quantum dots. In recognition of his achievement, a couple of events are planned in the year 2006.

Mindlin Centennial Symposium, jointly sponsored by the ASCE and ASME, will be held at the 15th US National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (http://usnctam06.colorado.edu) at University of Colorado at Boulder, on June 25-30, 2006. Abstracts should be sent by email as attached PDF files to xichen@civil.columbia.edu and ruihuang@mail.utexas.edu , with a copy to usnctam06@colorado.edu . Extreme Mechanics: Current Issues in Continuum & Fluid Mechanics ( August 21 - September 10, 2006)

Many of the most intriguing problems in solid and fluid mechanics involve systems in which key physical parameters are very large (or small), or in which unusual geometries constrain the behavior of systems in surprising ways. Thus, in granular systems the rigidity of the particles is in marked contrast to their softness at a macroscopic level. In some soft biological systems of recent physics interest, the macroscopic elastic properties are both non-linear and tunable in ways that can shed new light on solid/continuum mechanics. In fluid mechanics, free boundary problems such as drop snap-off and related phenomena combine familiar hydrodynamic phenomena in counter-intuitive (and often aesthetically pleasing) ways. This workshop will cover this timely subject, which can fairly be termed"extreme mechanics."

A mini-symposium in 7thWCCM: "ADVANCES AND APPLICATIONS OF COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN IMPACT ENGINEERING"

The aim of the “Advances and Applications of Computational Methods in Impact Engineering” mini-symposium is to recognize the increasing role of computation in Impact Engineering. It is now established that computational tools are indispensable to augment experimental techniques for the analysis of complex systems under dynamic loading. Many new computational techniques are currently being developed and new applications in the fields of impact and shock loadings are emerging. This mini-symposium will bring together engineers and scientists working in the area of Computational Impact Engineering.
