Advances in the research of the theory of Piezoelectricity and Acoustic Waves have provided essential foundation and new opportunities to device technology and have been fostering academic exchanges and interaction in the piezoelectric device industry. With the increased research activities in piezoelectricity and acoustic waves and recent fast growth in piezoelectric devices, we are also facing many technological challenges from real engineering applications and product design and manufacturing. Following the successful SPAWDA 2004 in Ningbo, Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Acoustical Society of China have decided, also with industrial support, to hold the SPAWDA 2006 at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China from December 14-17. The conference topics include, but not limited to,
Ø Theory of Piezoelectricity；
Ø Bulk and Surface Acoustic Waves；
Ø Piezoelectric Devices；
Ø Piezoelectric Materials；
Ø Ultrasonics；
Ø Manufacturing Technology of Piezoelectric Devices；
Ø Oscillators and Filters。
We cordially invite researchers from universities and laboratories to present their theoretical and experimental findings. We are also interested in hearing from engineers and management of the piezoelectric device industry to talk about new products and business trends, thus creating the opportunities to promote the close cooperation between research and product development.
We also invite our fellow researchers to organize focused sessions.
The SPAWDA 2006 will encourage the participation of students by offering the reduced registration fee.

Graduate students are invited to apply for financial assistance to enable them to attend the Science of Adhesion Gordon Research Conference to be held 6-11 August, in Tilton, New Hampshire. Full details of the meeting including Application to Attend are available at the GRC Website ( http://www.grc.uri.edu ).

The minimum award will be waiver of the registration fee at the double occupancy rate ($660). Additional funds to support travel to the conference will also be awarded.

To be considered for support, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Be a full-time graduate student working on a thesis project in which adhesion science plays an important role.

2. Submit an Application to the Science of Adhesion GRC including a poster title and abstract. These applications can only be made through the GRC website.

3. Submit an e-mail request for financial support to the conference chair, W.N. Unertl ( unertl@maine.edu ) This request should include the following:

· A brief statement of the student’s career goals.

· An estimate of travel costs to attend the conference.

4. Arrange for the thesis advisor to submit a letter of recommendation to the conference chair.

Applications should be submitted as soon as possible. Awards will be made starting on 5 June 2006. Applications will be accepted at any time up to the start of the conference or until all available funds are allotted.

The Gordon Research Conference on Physical Metallurgy will be held July 23-28, 2006 at the Holderness School in Plymouth New Hampshire. The organizers are putting together a program of invited lectures and poster sessions focused on "Microstructural Evolution and Stability". One can apply to participate at: www.grc.org.

Developments in experimental and computational materials science are significantly advancing our ability to analyze and predict the stability and dynamics of microstructures and nanostructures. New microscopies are
allowing us to measure materials structures and behavior over an unprecedented range of temporal and spatial scales, and, in some cases, in all three dimensions. Computational advances in first-principles techniques, molecular dynamics, and mesoscale simulation methodologies, have extended the range of materials phenomena that can be simulated in a similarly dramatic manner. The frontier now is at the intersection of experiment and theory, where the length and time-scales are beginning to overlap without the need for extrapolation; so we can now ask questions that were impossible to answer only a few years ago: How can materials models be experimentally tested and validated? What fundamental materials phenomena or parameters must be better understood experimentally to enable better models? What new insights into experimental analyses can be provided by simulation? In this conference we will explore these questions in detail with a focus on critical microstructural issues in Physical Metallurgy. Topics include grain growth and textural evolution, phase transformations, precipitation and coarsening, development of deformation microstructures, melting and solidification, and interfacial wetting.

In 1-6 July 2007, the International Conference on Experimental Mechanics will be held in historic Alexandroupolis, Greece, with its unique beaches, scenic beauty, and traditional Greek hospitality.

As part of the conference, I am organizing several sessions on the failure of piezoelectric ceramics. Piezoelectric ceramics which are used widely as sensors and actuators in smart structures are brittle and susceptible to cracking. As a result of the importance of the reliability of these devices, there has been tremendous interest in studying the fracture and failure behavior of such materials. High alternating electric fields cause mechanical and electrical degradation of piezo-ceramics.Electrically induced mechanical cracking is a serious degradation phenomenon which is not yet fully understood.The purpose of these sessions is to bring together scientists and engineers working in this field.

Special events for R.D. Mindlin's 100th anniversary

Raymond D. Mindlin, one of the greatest solid mechanicians of the 20th century, was born on September 17, 1906, in New York City. Professor Mindlin had made seminal contributions to many branches of applied mechanics, including photoelasticity, three-dimensional elasticity, contact and impact mechanics, waves and vibrations, piezoelectricity, gradient theories, unified multiscale constitutive theories, etc. His pioneering work has inspired many of the contemporary research areas, ranging from solid mechanics to soil mechanics, from structural mechanics to lattice theory, from size effect in metals to mechanics of quantum dots. In recognition of his achievement, a couple of events are planned in the year 2006.

Mindlin Centennial Symposium, jointly sponsored by the ASCE and ASME, will be held at the 15th US National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (http://usnctam06.colorado.edu) at University of Colorado at Boulder, on June 25-30, 2006. Abstracts should be sent by email as attached PDF files to xichen@civil.columbia.edu and ruihuang@mail.utexas.edu , with a copy to usnctam06@colorado.edu . The deadline for abstract submission is January 15th, 2006.

Mindlin Session at the 2006 IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium (http://www.ieee-uffc.org/2006fcs/), sponsored by the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics & Frequency Control Society, will be held at Miami, Florida, on June 5-7, 2006. Abstract deadline is January 27, 2006."

Extreme Mechanics: Current Issues in Continuum & Fluid Mechanics ( August 21 - September 10, 2006)

Many of the most intriguing problems in solid and fluid mechanics involve systems in which key physical parameters are very large (or small), or in which unusual geometries constrain the behavior of systems in surprising ways. Thus, in granular systems the rigidity of the particles is in marked contrast to their softness at a macroscopic level. In some soft biological systems of recent physics interest, the macroscopic elastic properties are both non-linear and tunable in ways that can shed new light on solid/continuum mechanics. In fluid mechanics, free boundary problems such as drop snap-off and related phenomena combine familiar hydrodynamic phenomena in counter-intuitive (and often aesthetically pleasing) ways. This workshop will cover this timely subject, which can fairly be termed"extreme mechanics."

The aim of the “Advances and Applications of Computational Methods in Impact Engineering” mini-symposium is to recognize the increasing role of computation in Impact Engineering. It is now established that computational tools are indispensable to augment experimental techniques for the analysis of complex systems under dynamic loading. Many new computational techniques are currently being developed and new applications in the fields of impact and shock loadings are emerging. This mini-symposium will bring together engineers and scientists working in the area of Computational Impact Engineering.

Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to) the following:
